To provide us some background on the topic of gender as related to our trip, Dr. Santana-Rogers prepared a background lecture on the various interpretations of feminism in Latin America. The lecture covered the various definitions of the concept and its evolution over time. As she mentioned, feminism in Latin America has been influenced by several circumstances:
- Colonialism
- The enslavement of African peoples
- The marginalization of Native peoples
According to Santana-Rogers,
FEMINISM then focuses on the critical work done by women fighting the previous circumstances for an equal place in society.
Santana-Rogers, 2021
Because different groups of women have had different experiences, the definitions and uses of feminism vary accordingly. As a result, the movement has experienced variations over time and place.
