The GPA – Argentina project took place during the month of July, 2022. The in-country schedule was quite intense, and it included classes, field trips, cultural visits, time for research, and meetings with experts in various fields.

I love going to bookstores and libraries, so having the chance to browse the many bookstores in Buenos Aires was a dream come true. The city of Buenos Aires has many bookstores, including used-book stores. The largest and most iconic of those is El Ateneo (pictured above). This bookstore’s main store is located in what used to be an old theater. Currently, El Ateneo has many branches throughout the city. Every one of the branches that we entered were full of people, which was very exciting to see.
Some of the smaller stores offered limited edition books or books that are no longer in print. Many of these books are not offered on Amazon, so it was a great opportunity to stock up on classics that might not be available in the US either for purchase or borrowing.

Browsing the stacks of books in the various bookstores, one of the things that struck me was the great variety of authors and perspectives. Many of the works by Argentine scholars have small print runs which means that they often do not reach the North American market. The result of this is that a large body of work does not receive the attention it should. My hope is that by incorporating these works into our classes, research, and conferences we can help in bringing these works to light and provide greater exposure to these scholars.
The following are some of the books I purchased:
- Micaela García. La chica de la sonrisa eterna
- Historia de una desobediencia
- Tramas feministas
- Cárceles de mujeres
- Espejos
- Mujeres
